dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We recognize the difficulty of this entire process and this choice for you, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be considered. Your strength is inspiring, and it is clear you love your child very much to consider this adoption plan. You can be sure your courage, careful consideration, thoughtfulness, and love will be impressed on your child for the rest of their life, and our family will always hold you in the highest regard if you choose us. We hope our previous experience with adoption provides some comfort and reassurance as you navigate this challenging process.

We promise to provide your child with love, physical and emotional protection, adventures, sparks of curiosity, critical thinking skills, creative outlets, exposure to and appreciation of a variety of cultures, independence, confidence, empathy, and lots of fun! We will nurture and support their individual interests. Your child will join us in our annual traditions like attending summer bluegrass concerts in the local park, picking apples at a mountain orchard, and making a gingerbread house and riding the Polar Express before Christmas.

As career educators, we highly value learning, questioning, and exploring, and we would teach your child about the world and help them grow into a happy, healthy, independent thinker. We will be open and honest with your child about their adoption story; there is no doubt they will know what a strong and courageous person you are.

With love and appreciation,
Abby, Jonathon, and Matilda

Matilda is so ready to teach your baby everything: how to share, be kind, dance, and tell jokes; what the best cartoons are; and the meaning of adoption.

About Us

We met in graduate school and married in 2012. Our careers took us to Texas then to our dream location in the mountains of the Carolinas! Jonathon is a university professor in human physiology, and Abby recently left her position as a university professor to take a work-from-home medical writing position that allows more flexibility and work–life balance. We love our simple, quiet lifestyle and have many similar interests. We run, hike, go tubing and kayaking, take road trips, try new restaurants, work on home projects, and spend time with family and friends. Our daughter, Matilda, whom we adopted in 2017, now joins us in all these adventures! Matilda is so excited to be a big sister (except for “changing poopy diapers”). She is very nurturing and will no doubt take wonderful care of a new baby. Adoption has changed our lives for the better, and we cannot wait for the opportunity to continue to grow our family.

Our Home & Pets

Our home is in a small community near a college town in the mountains of North Carolina. The home is on a beautiful six-acre plot, with plenty of privacy, room to roam and play, close proximity to hiking and river activities, and space for a more self-sufficient lifestyle. We have a slide, a climbing frame, swings, and a long driveway for running, bicycling, hopscotch, and driving kiddie cars. We have enjoyed completing home improvement projects over the past few years to make the space more our own. The nearby schools are some of the top in the state, and there are regular festivals, outdoor concerts, art walks, and more. We have an 11-year-old cat named Frank; he’s wild, weird, hilarious, and good with kids.

Our Extended Family

Our families have been nothing but supportive through our previous adoption, and they are delighted to hear that we are choosing adoption again.

Abby grew up with a close-knit family in Indiana. She has one younger sister, who works at a major theme park, so we have been able to take annual trips there since Matilda was born. We prioritize quality family time together with traveling. Abby’s parents visit us from Indiana nearly every month, and they absolutely love being grandparents. Abby has a cousin in North Carolina who has two children, so we are able to see them frequently for hiking, boating on the river or lake, or cooking out.

Jonathon also grew up in Indiana, with a twin sister and younger brother. His family was close and spent lots of time traveling for Jonathon’s ice hockey games. His mother passed away in 2001, and his father still lives in the house Jonathon grew up in. Jonathon’s sister’s family lives in Indiana too, and they have a seven-year-old daughter; Matilda always has a blast with her! Jonathon’s brother recently moved to California. We have yet to make a trip out there but hopefully will soon!

Our Adoption Story

It is impossible to put into words how grateful and honored we are to have been entrusted with parenting our daughter. We regularly send updates, pictures, and handmade cards to her birthmother and continue to provide age-appropriate information to Matilda about the entire process. As time has passed, we have been pulled toward adoption again. Both of us grew up with siblings, and we know siblings are not only playmates and partners in crime as children but also close friends and confidantes as adults. Because of a shared history of adoption, we believe the bond between these siblings would be incredibly special. Matilda is so ready to teach your baby everything: how to share, be kind, dance, and tell jokes; what the best cartoons are; and the meaning of adoption.
