Xavier & Mariesa

Family Type: Heterosexual Couple
State we live in: Virginia

dear expectant mother

While you may be experiencing a host of emotions right now, we hope that knowing we want to join you and your child on this journey can be a source of comfort and encouragement. Our goal is to grow our family and provide a baby with the safety, love, and support that will enable them to pursue and realize their biggest dreams.

We’d like to offer your child a home where they can develop curiosity, compassion, wisdom, and courage by seeing these qualities in action, but we also want to provide a home that appreciates silliness and humor, joy, and just being yourself. There will be bubble baths, bedtime stories, and endless snuggles, just as there will be reminders to do homework, Band-Aids for scrapes, and shoulders to cry on when life hurts. We promise to celebrate anything that engages your child’s sense of wonder, and we will honor the cultures and traditions your child identifies as their own.

If chosen, we will spend the rest of our lives honoring the love you have for your child right now, and we will partner with you in teaching your baby that love is more powerful than pain, is stronger than fear, and will transcend any distance or time. Thank you for taking the time to get to know a bit about us. We hope you’ll give us the chance to know the two of you!

We’d like to offer your child a home where they can develop curiosity, compassion, wisdom, and courage by seeing these qualities in action, but we also want to provide a home that appreciates silliness and humor, joy, and just being yourself.

About Us

If we were a piece of furniture, we’d be that handcrafted dinner table made of reclaimed wood with a distressed finish. While shaped and marked by our individual life experiences, we’ve crafted ourselves together to become something solid, beautiful, and new. Despite coming to graduate school 10 years ago from very different paths—Xavier emigrated from France as an adult, and Mariesa came to the U.S. as an exchange student from the Philippines mid-high school—we found in each other the best companion to pursue a life of adventure and love. We challenge and encourage each other to push our intellectual and creative boundaries both in our respective careers in data-mining (Xavier in artificial intelligence and scientific applications; Mariesa in financial market regulation) and at home (trying new activities or exercises, recipes, or fiber-arts projects).

Our Home & Pets

We live in a three-story row-house with a garden in the backyard. Our main entrance shares a courtyard with many young families. Xavier works from home and Mariesa often teleworks, allowing both of us to provide care from home. Our family bunny, Obie, is ready to provide snuggles and attention to a new family member, as are our teenagers, Liam and Ilèna. We live in a national top-10 school district offering a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Ilèna currently trains in sabre at the local fencing academy, while Liam is learning woodcraft at a shop nearby. We love being outdoors, from our daily walks or bike rides around the neighborhood to longer runs around nearby lakes and weekend trips to the beaches or mountains.

Our Extended Family

Because we are both immigrants to the U.S., most of our extended family lives overseas. This makes any gathering as a family a truly exciting international affair, whether it’s flying to France to spend time with Xavier’s parents, two brothers, and their wives and children; taking a road trip throughout the Netherlands to visit all six of Mariesa’s aunts and uncles and her 20 cousins; or braving the longer trips to Malaysia and Australia, where Mariesa’s paternal relatives reside. Your baby will be welcomed with excitement and joy by a family that spans multiple languages and countries. Many family members also visit us here, like Xavier’s parents, who usually come twice a year for time together in the spring and fall.

While living in the States, we have also formed a number of close friendships with wonderful people whom we consider part of our extended family. We often have dinner together, either going out to try new restaurants or staying in for potlucks while playing board games or watching movies. Liam and Ilèna enjoy caring for the new babies recently born into our circle of friends and are very eager for us to have an addition of our own.

What Led Us To Adoption

An integral part of our love story is how we came to see each other as partners in parenting since Mariesa was a single mother when we met. Our love and companionship is enriched daily by the care and camaraderie we share in raising Liam and Ilèna. It has always been our dream to have children together, but we’re not physically able to due to surgery Mariesa underwent years ago. Coparenting with our children’s father and stepmother has also grown our appreciation for defining family as an ever-expanding, ever-flexible group of people brought together by those they love. We hope adoption will allow us to continue growing that sense of family to include your baby and, to the extent that you want, you.
