When couples decide to adopt a baby, sometimes one partner is enthusiastic while the other is less so. There are exceptions, but usually one person is more eager to adopt than his or her partner. We often hear this referred to as “reluctant spouse.”

Unless individuals have pre-existing medical problems, they usually assume it will be easy to conceive a child. Therefore, it comes as a shock for the one in every six couples who are diagnosed with infertility.

Years ago, if you had gone to an adoption agency as a single person, you would have been turned down. It just wasn't done. There were even laws against single parent adoption in some states.
