Adoption FAQs for Birthmothers
There are many reasons expectant mothers consider adoption for their baby. Here are just a few reasons: being unable to financially support a child, not ready to be a parent, lack of support, unstable or unsafe living situation. There are so many other possible reasons. Whatever your reasons may be, the bottom line is you are making this decision because you want what is best for your child. We understand this is a difficult choice, and we are here to support you.
You get to choose the level of communication, or type of adoption, you have with the family and your baby after the adoption. An open adoption involves regular, ongoing communication and in-person visits. A semi-open adoption includes regular, ongoing communication, but no in-person visits. A closed adoption involves very little to no communication. This choice is entirely up to you.
Every adoptive parent we work with is thoroughly evaluated by a licensed social worker through a process called an adoption home study. This process includes assessments of their character, marital stability, financial situation, lifestyle, medical history, reasons for adopting, and more. Each parent undergoes a background check and gets their fingerprints taken. The social worker will also inspect the family’s home to ensure it is a safe environment for a child to grow and thrive.
Absolutely! You can choose your baby’s adoptive family from among those waiting to adopt with us, or we can choose a family for you. We can put you in contact with them if you’d like and you can communicate with them in whatever way you’re most comfortable. Some birthparents and adoptive families even choose to meet in person. You get to decide how open or private you want your relationship with the family to be.
