dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

You are the connection, the beginning, and the first mother of the child we hope to parent. Simply saying thank you is only the beginning of the deep gratitude we feel for you. The opportunity to be parents and to be able to create a community for this child with you would be amazing. We respect the decision you are making and thank you for considering becoming a part of our extended family.

Our promise to you is to provide your child unconditional love and to be vulnerable and embrace your child’s honesty, creativity, and development. We will provide your child with mentors, coaches, family, teachers, and childhood friends to share life’s lessons with. We value honesty, love, diversity, openness, communication, and respect. We hope you will learn this about us personally through our interactions during this process.

As this child grows up, we envision telling them lots of stories about their life. You are the first part of all of their stories, and we want them to learn from the amazing strength of character it takes to make this decision. Your actions will be the basis of the story that will teach them about selfless love.
Thank you for taking a few moments to learn more about us. We are excited to learn more about you and your family soon.

Our promise to you is to provide your child unconditional love and to be vulnerable and embrace your child’s honesty, creativity, and development.

About Us

We grew up on the coast of Florida and met in high school in a typing class in ninth grade. We fell in love then but didn’t realize it until seven years later! We have been together for 20 years. We have a four-year-old son who was adopted at birth. We tell him frequently about having three strong women (two moms and his birthmother) influencing his individuality. We love living in a small university town with diverse neighborhoods, a strong sense of community, and beautiful outdoor spaces. We enjoy cooking, spending time with friends and family, outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, gardening), traveling the world, and playing with our dogs, Betty and Fenway, and our cat, Abby. We both work at the university; Rachelle is a physical therapist, and Erica is a college advisor.

Our Home & Pets

Our home is filled with lots of energy and love. Our son and the dogs enjoy playing in our fenced-in yard, playing at nearby parks, and going on walks through the neighborhood. Friends and family know they are always welcome in our home. We live in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on a pretty, tree-lined cul-de-sac. Our house is completely renovated. (We are DIYers at heart!) We now have a modern kitchen and a beautiful porch overlooking a small lake, and we are looking to add a gas fireplace in the next year.

Our Extended Family

People are very important to us. We both come from close-knit families who visit regularly. We love spending time together and enjoy family dinner (Mangia Monday) on Monday nights with Uncle. Rachelle’s family is the sixth generation in the town she was born in. Erica comes from a large Italian-American family that gathers to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and special occasions.

We enjoy spending time with family in a shared family cabin in the Appalachian Mountains. With our extended family, we have built furniture, renovated houses, built decks, and traveled the world. We attend garden festivals annually and love, love, love to cook with each other for family events. Our close friends are an extension of our family. Sundays are for spending time with family and friends. Our standing rule is that dinner is available, so let us know if you can join! Our friends and family visit often, and one of our values is “family first.” We spend as much time as we can with siblings, our parents, and our closest friends.

What Led Us To Adoption

We both have always wanted a family. Our friends seek us out when times are hard and when times are good. The joke with many of our friends is that we finished raising many of them. We both grew up with a sibling and know how special it is to have that person in our lives. We very much would like for our son to have a sibling to play with, grow with, support, and lean on as he grows. We love having family around and look forward to sharing the opportunity to provide unending love, support, and guidance to a second child.
