Dear Expectant Mother,
We have spent so much time thinking about what to say to you. There is no right thing, though, so we just decided to speak from our heart. Can we tell you that we have talked about your child as if he or she is already a part of our family? We have held a place in our hearts for you and your child for many years, knowing one day our paths will connect for a divine meeting. Yet, in our imagining, we also recognize the struggle you are facing. We know that in our joy and hope, there is a significant sacrifice for you. Thus, we hope and pray that you are reassured we will deeply love your child, because we already do.
Having you consider us as parents is truly a great honor, and we will not let you down. We wish to raise a child you’re proud of. We want to raise a child who will leave the world a better place. There is a reason why you were chosen to have this child and why you are considering us. We wish to instill in your child compassion for others, a curiosity about the world, and the ability to laugh often. We will empower your child to be daring, bold, brave, and kind.
We want to be a part of the dreams you have for your child. We are blessed to be a part of your journey, and we are excited to meet you.
We met six years ago. Vernetta is an ER doctor, and Trey is a television writer who also owns a theater and TV production company. We consider ourselves a fun-loving couple. Vernetta has an unexpected playful and silly side; she loves to read, cycle, and hike. She’s a planner and organizer (her favorite phrase is, “Trey, what’s the plan?”) and she has a natural zest for life. Trey is the type of person who has never met a stranger! People are instantly drawn to her fun and warm personality. She‘s a creative, and she loves preparing Caribbean dishes for our family and friends. Our families and friends often tease that we laugh our way through life, and we do! We believe in living life to its fullest.
We have a beautiful and spacious three-bedroom home with a big backyard. We also have a park and on-site water park, the latter of which even has a splash pond for younger children. Our neighbors are friendly and we socialize often; they’re all so excited about our adoption and can’t wait to have a child join us in holiday fun! Also very close to our home is an animal sanctuary and petting zoo. Our nephews and nieces love going there, and we have so many fun memories there. We are hoping to create more with your child.
Our Extended Family
We tend to get together with our families for all major holidays. Vernetta is the oldest and has a younger brother, and Trey is the oldest of three and has a brother and sister. We have many nieces and nephews and are so lucky to see them all often. Everyone comes to the theater to support Trey on opening nights, which is a wonderful tradition that gets us all together to have fun and see Trey’s hard work paying off.
As a couple, we always spend New Year’s Eve together, because it’s important for us to discuss our goals and dreams for the upcoming year. We’re big birthday people and love to celebrate with cake, presents, and trips. Christmas is spent Caribbean-style: we love to eat jerk chicken, big bowls of rice and peas, and black cake!
What Led Us To Adoption
Adoption has always been our only option around starting a family. We both want children and speak about starting our family often. Before we even went on our first date, we had a conversation about having kids, and for the last five years, Trey has been buying baby clothes and collecting culturally diverse baby books. In our own families, we have several adopted family members: Vernetta’s aunt and her partner recently adopted three children, and Trey’s West Indian-Jamaican family embraces their culture, so family raising distant family members is very common in her community. Our families are very excited about our adoption journey!
