dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

We hope you are doing okay during what must be a complicated time in your life. We’re sending you wishes of strength and comfort.

There are so many people ready to love and care for your child, so your decision will surely be difficult. We can’t say we will be the perfect parents for your child, but we can say we want to be parents (good, thoughtful, loving parents) more than anything in the world. We can say we are ready to try our very best to give your child the life you dream of him or her having. Your child will be loved and appreciated and given room to grow into who they want to be. We believe in second chances, choice, responsibility, and kindness. We will cherish our time together and make sure our home is full of laughter, adventure, challenge, books, and good food!

As a couple, we have been through loss and heartbreak along with joy and adventure. We know we are resilient as a result of the things we have experienced. We are ready to walk with you through this journey, forming a beautiful family that is probably different than any of us expected! We are so grateful you are taking the time to read this, and we hope to get to know you!

Thank you,
Micah & Katherine

About Us

We’ve been married for eight years. After moving around from DC to Denver, we have settled in North Carolina, close to our families and a warm community of friends. Katherine has taught middle school for fourteen years and currently teaches humanities in a small school focusing on outdoor education. She loves sharing her passions of reading, canoeing, camping, and skiing with students! Katherine is the family’s nurturer. She loves being in the water, whether it’s a river, lake, ocean, or bathtub. Micah is an expert in environmental policy, and he works from home, giving him flexibility to not only do a great job but also run, do projects around the house, and have adventures with our two dogs. Micah is enthusiastic and generous, and his laugh is infectious. He is always singing! He can identify all the trees and critters in the woods around us. Together we love to hike, hear live music, cycle, and cook.

Our Home & Pets

Our little mountain city is a great place to raise a family. We live in a lovingly renovated old house with plenty of room for kids and guests, walking distance to an elementary school, with our two rescue dogs, both sweet and spoiled as can be. We love coffee on our front porch and greeting neighbors walking by. The backyard has shady space for our grill, patio, hammock, and fire pit. We’re two blocks from a park with tennis courts, a pool, and a playground and five blocks from a bustling street with a library and restaurants, including great ice cream! Nearby, there’s a greenway with a creek, and we’re also close to the real wilderness, with trails and rivers.

Our Extended Family

Micah grew up in a small town with a big, loving family. Micah’s parents and grandparents live next door to each other, and Micah’s younger sister lives nearby. His family has a cabin on the New River. Visits there include lively games of cornhole and croquet and river stomping to search for crawdads and salamanders.

Katherine was very close to her mother, who died five years ago. We still have her cabin on a mountain lake nearby, full of happy memories and books and toys “Grandmere” chose for her grandchildren so our child will know they have a special angel looking out for them. Katherine’s brother lives in Oregon with his wife and daughters. We visit twice a year, and Katherine and her brother think they are hilarious together. Katherine’s dad also passed away, and she was able to care for him and spend quality time with him over the last couple of years. Katherine is close to her stepmother, who is excited to be a step-grandmother!

We enjoy cutting down our Christmas tree and making our own decorations to go with the sentimental ornaments we’ve collected. On Christmas Eve, we exchange books and chocolate and spend a cozy evening together.

What Led Us To Adoption

Katherine has spent her whole life around children, always expecting to be a mom. Micah has a large family, and his favorite memories are of outdoor adventures with extended family. He’s excited to make memories with his future children. Pregnancy did not come easily, so we are thrilled adoption may give us the family of our dreams. We are godparents to our best friend’s adopted son, and we’ve learned so much from them. We are excited our child will have a biological and an adoptive family. Katherine’s first cousin was adopted internationally, and we cannot imagine our family without him! He has searched for his biological family in Russia, which has been difficult, and we would love our child to be able to know their biological family.
