dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

We’d love to welcome you to our family! We know you have a lot on your mind and heart right now, and we are grateful you are taking the time to get to know us and to imagine what it would be like for us to raise your child. Of course, you won’t have to imagine it completely because you will always have a place in your child’s life and in ours should you choose to. But for now, here are some more details for your imagination.

Your child will be loved unconditionally by us and our extended families, no matter who they are. We will raise your child to help people who need it, to love and care for animals, and to see the best in everyone. We will also make room for your child to have an active imagination, especially about how the world could be a better place and how to bring that about. We will instill the values of compassion and care that we learned in church and synagogue as well. We will also support them in whatever pursuits they find meaningful.

We value education and will ensure that your child has access to the best education available. To us, education includes creative pursuits like the arts, music, and writing. It also includes an appreciation of nature, other cultures, and, most importantly, empathy. Temperamentally, we are relationship builders, and we will help your child build connections and nourish them. We imagine you may want to be one of those connections, and if so, we welcome you.

Your child will be loved unconditionally by us and our extended families, no matter who they are.

About Us

We are both professors and writers. Mandy teaches ethics to future computer scientists, and Kristel builds on her time as a hospital chaplain to teach ethics and religion to future doctors. We both feel called to do this work and to help students see the beautiful complexity of the world and other people around them. Mandy is upbeat and literally dances from place to place, and Kristel is wry and contemplative. We laugh a lot together. Our daily lives are a blend of teaching, reading, writing, and going for long walks in our neighborhood. Our hobbies include game nights with friends, hiking in state and local parks, and surveying our city for the best donuts and chai lattes. We are active in both the neighborhood Jewish community and a local community of Christian pastors.

Our Home & Pets

We are lucky to live in a vibrant, diverse university neighborhood that is also very beautiful. We are within easy walking distance of several parks, many wonderful restaurants and cafes, and several bookstores. The local elementary school is only two blocks from our front door! There are a few museums and theaters within walking distance and many more a short drive away; there are even a few theaters that put on plays specifically for children! We love living here, and we cannot wait to share it with our future child. We share our home with three sweet, cuddly cats, who will be excited to have a new friend and source of treats.

Our Extended Family

Kristel is an only child with a large extended family in Kentucky, and we drive down there several times a year to see them. We go hiking in Kentucky’s many state and national parks, wander through its brightly colored historic downtowns, and catch up with longtime friends.

Mandy’s parents are still in California, and her brother and his wife and kids are in Seattle; some of our favorite times of the year are when we fly out to visit them. Because airplane travel has been difficult during the pandemic, we’ve gathered over Zoom for the past two years to celebrate Passover, reading through the story of liberation from Egypt together and coordinating our dinner plans so that it could feel like we were all eating together. We adore our niece and nephew and look forward to taking joint trips with them all over the country.

What Led Us To Adoption

Since we started a relationship in 2005, we knew we wanted to raise a child together. Adoption has always been one of those dreams. Kristel has cousins who were adopted, and she grew up with them as part of her extended family. More recently, many friends have adopted children. Back then, when we were graduate students, all our dreams and plans were about the future, when we would be able to give a child everything they deserved. It's taken some time, but we have finally reached that future! Expanding our family through adoption seems natural to us and aligns with our religious values of compassion and loving our neighbor.
