dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

While we do not know you yet, the amount of strength, courage, and deeply instilled values you must have to consider an adoption plan is inspiring. Sean’s aunt, who adopted a child after being unable to bear one of her own, told us she was only able to become a mother as a result of the selfless sacrifice of another woman. She told us a life was brought into the world and entrusted to her for safekeeping. No gift, she reminded us, could ever be greater. At her college graduation, Sean’s cousin read a speech she wrote about the nature of giving. “We find ourselves in the sacrifices we make,” she told the audience, and I knew she was not only referring to her own sacrifices but also to those that came before her, like her birth mother. She knew and wanted us to know that it is through sacrifice we discover what we really value and, consequently, who, in fact, we are. The tough decision is often the one we know in our heart of hearts to be the “right” one. Should you choose to give us this gift, know your sacrifice will be respected, your gift will be cherished immeasurably, and your values will be carried on.

We have the deepest desire to be parents, the hearts to love, and the resources to provide for your child. Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you.

About Us

We both come from humble roots and hardworking families. We share a strong spirit of self-determination and a love for travel and education. We met during the summer of 2010 in graduate school. That same year, Sean surprised Chris by going to visit him while he studied abroad in Paris; that’s where we officially fell in love while eating cookies along the Seine. Ten years later, we find ourselves having completed many of life’s journeys together. Chris graduated from law school and is a practicing attorney. Sean completed his doctorate in clinical psychology and provides therapy to those in need. Our romance has grown from its infancy into a mutually supportive and mature relationship, and we find ourselves certain that our next adventure together is the next and only adventure worth having: raising a child.

Our Home & Pets

We live at the end of quiet cul-de-sac in a large, beautiful home. What makes this house our home is how we live in it. We stayed up late nights listening to music while painting each room the right color. Chris tends the garden and the apple tree out back by the lake. Sean works to keep the lawn green and mowed. We cherish and adore our two quirky felines, and some evenings we relax on the patio or take walks around the lake out back. While we ourselves cannot bring a life into this world, we look forward to raising the young life we are gifted with. In these ways and more, we hope to make our house even more of a home.

Our Extended Family

Family is an important part of our lives. Just this year Sean visited his grandmother on the East Coast for a very memorable 91st birthday party, where she stood up and made a speech that brought a tear to nearly everyone’s eye! Although Sean’s mother recently passed, her memory lives on in her siblings and her two children. Sean’s aunt and uncle love to throw big Italian family dinners for the holidays, and this is a delicious tradition we carry on.

Chris’s family all get along famously with lots of laughs, love, and teasing. Chris’s parents are adorable grandparents, who are notorious for sneaking their grandchildren candy and sweets. As Christians, Chris’s family has longstanding holiday traditions that involve both going to church and large get-togethers after church with family and friends. We have brought pieces of our respective family traditions to our relationship and even made some of our own.

What Led Us To Adoption

We have always known we wanted to be fathers. Part of this came from influence; we were both fortunate to have stable and strong fathers to guide us. We both remember hearing (even as teenagers), “You will be a really great father someday.” We were raised with families who welcomed adopted children into our respective families, and we look forward to the good (and challenging!) times ahead. Chris looks forward to calling up Grandma and getting tips for how to deal with the “terrible twos.” Sean looks forward to reading fun adventure stories together before bedtime, the same ones his father read to him and his sister. We both look forward to imparting our love of learning, humor, and ambition and helping our child safely navigate the complexities of life.
