We first became friends in high school, and our lives continued to intersect until we fell in love. We were married on a sailboat surrounded by close friends and family. Becky has a master’s in archaeology and art history; she split her time working between museums, field archaeology, and the medical field. Serine has a successful business managing a company’s sourcing, sales, and marketing efforts. We are very fortunate that our careers have allowed us to travel globally, to experience different cultures, and to visit family and friends around the world. We are raising our two-year-old daughter together, and having her is the most amazing adventure we have ever shared. Becoming parents has been our biggest dream come true, and our lives are so rich and full. Our daughter is very excited to have a younger sibling, and we can’t wait to grow our family. We are a loving, close family who truly enjoy being together, and we embrace life fully.
We live in a three-bedroom home on 22 wooded acres in a rural neighborhood in New England, in a close-knit community with great schools nearby. We are located two miles from a natural lake for swimming, boating, or fishing, and a short drive from the ocean. We nurture a large vegetable garden in the summer; have a beautiful outdoor space for entertaining or playing with our daughter and our two rescue dogs, Kahlua and Baxter; and enjoy regular hikes or cross-country skiing into the woods from our backyard. We have a small sledding hill on our property for winter fun and always chop down our own Christmas tree from our property. In the summer, we enjoy dinner on our deck, bonfires, and relaxing in the hot tub.
We both grew up in close-knit families. Becky has two brothers and one sister, several nieces and nephews, and close extended family on both sides. We share vacations, holidays, and family traditions together, and our daughter is close to her aunt, uncles, and cousins. Becky learned her love of camping and the outdoors from her parents and still enjoys fishing with her dad and sister. Becky has wonderful memories of preparing traditional foods with her mother and aunts as a child and keeps her mother’s rich Mexican-American culinary heritage alive in our home.
Serine grew up in a tightly-knit family with a younger sister, grandparents next door, lots of cousins, and several aunts and uncles. She traveled frequently growing up, spending time with family in Norway, where her father was born. Serine’s sister lives nearby and is a large part of our daughter’s life. Though extended family is farther away, we visit them in Norway and across the country at least once each year, and they visit our home for holidays and summer vacations. Serine’s father lived his last few years with us before he passed, and having this time with him was a true gift for our family.
We both come from close-knit families where diversity and adoption were a part of our lives. Becky’s brother adopted his two daughters and Serine has an uncle and two cousins who were adopted, so we have seen firsthand how adoption can enrich and grow families. Adoption has always been a part of our plan together. Our families are very supportive of this journey, and we are excited to grow our family through adoption.
