dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

Thank you for considering us to raise the child you are nurturing. We are grateful for the love and care you are already giving this tiny human and know it will provide a lasting, positive foundation. The little one you are growing now is a blessing and a gift to the world. Thank you for reading about us and imagining this child as a part of our family of fun.

If you choose us, we will be incredibly excited to be able to raise another child. As parents, we focus on fun, kindness, learning about the amazing world we live in, and helping our child (or children!) learn about their gifts, what they love, and who and what they want to be. Everyone in our family receives daily and lifelong love and respect. As our kids grow to be adults, we want them to have tools to build vibrant interests and vital networks that fill their lives with joy and connection.

We are excited to help our children realize their potential, learn to be people others can count on, and become humans who bring compassion and delight to the world. We love cooking, listening to music, dancing, hiking, having campfires under the moon, and looking at art. Our family values and centers love, gratitude, curiosity, and courage. We believe in doing what we can to make the world a better place and are very much looking forward to raising another child alongside the amazing son we have. We look forward to connecting sometime soon!

About Us

Laughing and having fun together has gotten us through the ups and downs of more than twenty years together! We have faced a lot of challenges as a couple, from a wide variety of jobs we’ve each held, supporting sick family members, and many moves including living abroad for two year in Hong Kong. Luckily, we have been able to laugh along the way, and working through challenges has made us stronger. These days, Suzy works for our town leading communications, and Jody works leading human resources for an architecture firm. We live near Grand Teton and Yellowstone National parks and are grateful to be in such an awe-inspiring setting. Our town is an amazing place to raise kids, and our son goes to a dual-immersion Spanish-English school, which we love. Our friends and family describe us as a rock-solid couple that are great at supporting and loving one another. We thrive on trying new things, connecting with people, and supporting our community.

Our Home

We live in a very safe and beautiful town near a lot of great places to be outside. Our home is cozy in the winter and breezy in the summer, full of windows looking out on the mountains and a bunch of trees. The kitchen, where we all enjoy cooking together, is central to our life. Suzy likes baking cookies and cakes, Jody is our family’s lunch and dinner chef, and Sora helps each of us whenever possible. We also have an activity room that we all use—Sora and Jody play soccer and do gymnastics, Suzy does yoga, and we all regularly enjoy family dance parties! On summer evenings, we ride bikes to a local park to water our plot in the community garden. Sora loves this park, where he plays in the small creek and rides his scooter and skateboard.

Our Extended Family

We both grew up in tight-knit families with siblings. Jody’s mom lives down the block from us now and moved from the East Coast largely to spoil her only grandchild, which she is great at doing! She and Sora Heath love to eat ice cream, play games, watch TV, and learn things together. She is also excited to share these special moments with another grandchild.

The rest of our family is scattered across the country in California, Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and we spend time hosting or visiting them on vacations and for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our holidays are centered on good food and good people, and we’re grateful to have amazing family and friends to celebrate.

Each winter, we love spending a day in the snow cutting down our own Christmas tree and then decorating it with holiday music and pizzelle Christmas cookies from Suzy’s Italian-side. Each new Year, we watch fireworks at our good friends’ home, which has a view of the mountains and lightshow, and we spend many summer weekends camping with friends. Being in nature with family, away from the demands of daily life, is an important way that our family connects and recharges.

What Led Us To Adoption

We love being parents. Our son, Sora Heath, was born on a snowy morning in December of 2015. Suzy carried him and we used a donor to conceive. Unfortunately, she had pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure though, so Sora was delivered six weeks early and spent two weeks in the hospital. Doctors felt that future pregnancies for Suzy were likely to be high risk, so we were excited to find Lifelong as a way for nontraditional families to be able to adopt. We would love for Sora to have a sibling, and we have plenty of love in our hearts and home to share with another child.
