dear expectant mother

Dear Expectant Mother,

Growing up, there were times when each of us worried that, as gay men, we wouldn’t be able to have families when we were older. It seemed that if we chose to live authentically, we might be forced to give up our wish for children and family. Of course, now we know that is simply not true, and we are lucky enough to live in a world in which we can be parents. At times, we still can’t believe our dreams may come true.

Parenthood is not something we will take lightly, and we are blessed you would consider us. We promise to love your child more than anything else, and we will strive every day to provide him or her with the best life we can provide. We can’t wait to introduce your baby to our family and friends, and we know his or her life will be filled with so much warmth and joy.

There are so many memories we can't wait to create with your child: picking flowers from our garden, teaching them to play tennis or maybe a musical instrument, and even watching them descend the staircase on Christmas morning. We are so eager to get to know them and learn their interests as they grow. We promise we will always try to see the world through their eyes and will encourage them to reach for the stars.

Love,
Tom and Jimmy

About Us

We met in March of 2011 at college and were married in December of 2014. As a couple, we share a love for live music and theater, hosting dinner parties for our family and friends, cooking, and challenging each other to a tennis match. We feel we complement each other perfectly and both believe in the importance of respect and honest communication. Tom formerly worked as an environmental educator at a nature-based preschool and kindergarten; he spent all day in the forest with small children. Jimmy is a medical oncologist focused on the treatment of breast cancer. He works at a major academic medical center and particularly enjoys working with medical students. We have lived in a few different places around the country, primarily due to Jimmy’s medical training, and are thrilled to be back near our hometowns and among family and long-time friends.

Our Home & Pets

We live in a welcoming and diverse lake community. Our street dead-ends into the lake, so traffic is very limited, leading to a street-wide race every Sunday morning for the children. The local park is a five-minute walk from our home and features a massive playground, water access, and summer festivals for the entire family. We will often run there in the mornings to catch the beautiful sunrise and walk there in the evenings for sunsets over the water. Aside from the two of us, our house is also home to three wonderful cats, two of which have been part of our family for nearly ten years. We see our current house as a forever home and are excited to grow into it.

Our Extended Family

We chose to settle down close to both of our families. Besides our parents and numerous siblings, we also have five nephews and one niece (and counting!) all under the age of 6. The children love to come over to play with the toys we have for them, explore in the backyard, and feed the cats. Our parents and all of our siblings live within a 45-minute drive from our house, which makes family get-togethers easy. Our family takes a bi-annual vacation to create meaningful memories for the children; we’ve traveled everywhere from the ocean to the Smoky Mountains.

One of our favorite holidays is Christmas, and we are eager to have our child join in our traditional cookie decorating event at Grammy and Grandpap’s house as well as the yearly matching pajama photo with all the cousins.

Our families are thrilled we are planning to adopt, and we are so excited our baby will grow up near so many loved ones.

What Led Us To Adoption

By our second date, we were trying to figure out whether the other person was interested in having children in the future. Fortunately, we were both very honest about our desire for a family even at that time, and our aspirations for children have not wavered since those early discussions. For some time now, we have been waiting for the perfect moment to start the process of building our family. We knew we wanted to wait until Jimmy was finished with his medical training and ideally when we were again near our parents and siblings. When it came time for us to seriously consider how we wanted to start a family, we were both highly interested in adoption.
